About Prof. Dr. Akın Akakın

A neurosurgeon with more than two decades of operative experience in brain tumors, cerebrovascular disease and the surgical treatment of movement disorders.

He graduated from the English-language program at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine and completed his neurosurgical residency at the same institution. He then worked as a research scientist at the University of Florida alongside Prof. Albert L. Rhoton Jr., whose microsurgical neuroanatomy laboratory trained a generation of skull base surgeons. His deep brain stimulation training was completed at reference centers in the United States and Germany.

Deep brain stimulation is the core of his practice. With more than 1700 procedures performed, he is among the most experienced DBS surgeons in Turkey, treating patients with Parkinson's disease, essential tremor and dystonia.

Why Patients Travel to Istanbul for This Team

Case volume, international training and a genuinely multidisciplinary approach

Exceptional DBS Case Volume

More than 1700 deep brain stimulation procedures. In functional neurosurgery, where electrode placement is measured in millimeters, operative volume is the single most meaningful measure of experience.

Training in the Rhoton Laboratory

Research training at the University of Florida under Prof. Albert L. Rhoton Jr., the reference authority in microsurgical neuroanatomy, followed by advanced DBS fellowship training in Germany.

Assessed by a Full Board

Every candidate for functional surgery is reviewed by neurology, neurosurgery and psychiatry together. Patient selection, not the operation itself, determines the outcome in DBS.

Patient Feedback

  5/5 from 22+ verified reviews (DoktorTakvimi.com)

"I arrived barely able to walk and went home moving freely. I was out exploring Istanbul five days after my lumbar disc operation. Twelve years have passed and I have had no further trouble with my back."

Verified patient, DoktorTakvimi

"I was diagnosed with Parkinson's at 27. Over fourteen years I lost the ability to do even the simplest things for myself. The deep brain stimulation surgery gave me my life back."

Ahmet Saatçi, Parkinson's patient

"Several hospitals had refused my mother's spinal stenosis operation because of an embolism risk. Prof. Akakın accepted the case and completed it successfully."
