About This Treatment
Movement disorders arise from disordered activity in specific brain circuits, and present as involuntary movement, tremor, sustained muscle contraction or difficulty initiating movement. Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, dystonia, cerebral palsy and post-traumatic tremor are the main conditions in this group. Prof. Dr. Akın Akakın is one of the surgeons who established movement disorder surgery as an active field in Turkey. He founded the movement disorder surgery and DBS program at Bahçeşehir University Faculty of Medicine and has published extensively in this area. Treatment is matched to the individual: deep brain stimulation, lesioning surgery or other neuromodulation techniques, depending on the condition, its severity and the patient's wider clinical picture. The decision is reached with neurology and psychiatry colleagues rather than in isolation, because in functional neurosurgery the question of whether to operate is harder, and more consequential, than the operation itself.
