About This Treatment
Neuromodulation is the general term for treatments that regulate abnormal nervous system activity using electrical stimulation. Prof. Dr. Akın Akakın is a founding member of the Neuromodulation Society of Turkey and of the Turkish chapter of the International Neuromodulation Society, and is among the pioneers of the field in the country. The main techniques are deep brain stimulation, spinal cord stimulation for chronic pain, vagus nerve stimulation for drug-resistant epilepsy, and sacral neuromodulation for bladder dysfunction. Between them these methods treat Parkinson's disease, tremor, dystonia, chronic pain, epilepsy that has not responded to medication, and urinary incontinence that is not caused by a mechanical problem. What these treatments have in common is that they are adjustable and reversible: the stimulation can be tuned to the individual over time, and stopped if it does not deliver.
